Happy Birthday

February means that winter is slowly going away and spring is coming. It also means Danny’s and Nicker’s birthday!!! That’s on February 12. I hope you will celebrate with us.
A while back, they had a birthday party with Captain Kazoo. You can read about it in Nickazoo Birthday Party from the story archive. They always have a great time. Danny likes chocolate cake with whipped cream and bananas between the layers. Nicker wants a peanut butter cake, of course, with peanuts between the layers. Captain Kazoo likes both – although I’ll tell you a little secret. After the last birthday party, his kazoo didn’t hum very well. It had some peanut butter and a bit of banana stuck inside. Can you imagine what a kazoo would sound like when filled with chocolate, whipped cream and peanuts. Imagine humming “Happy Birthday” through that goop!
What do you like for your birthday? If you read the last couple of issues you’ll know that I had Cornish pasties for mine. (You will have also met *Tommy the Tommyknocker* who knows all about pasties. He got one for his birthday!)

Guess who else has a birthday that day – February 12. PAUL BUNYAN. If you’re not in the United States – and even if you are – you may not know who that is. After today you will.
Paul Bunyan was a giant. Some say that he was over 100 feet tall! His pet was Babe the Blue Ox, who was also very large. Together they had many adventures. According to the tales, they did things like dig the Grand Canyon and make the Rocky Mountains. Minnesota has more than 10,000 lakes because these two were tromping around.
      These are “tall tales.”
Who would have a dining table 10 miles long? And a train to carry food from one end to the other?
      Paul Bunyan did.
Who would need a herd of cows to fill the baby bottle? Who would use wagon wheels for buttons?
      Paul Bunyan did.
Who lived in a place so cold that when you spoke your words froze in the air and you had to wait until spring thaw to hear what was said?
      Paul Bunyan did.
There are hundreds of stories about Paul Bunyan, Babe the Blue Ox, Sourdough Sam the cook and all the others. In this issue, you will get a taste from twelve of my favorites. After that, you can go online, or better yet to the library, to find more.

Be sure to explore the entire menu, even if that takes several visits. Get to know us, and the whole sea dragon family. (They always seem to be up to something!) Be sure to come back. Some sections will be updated with new stuff to enjoy! We hope that you will tell others so they will also come visit and share with us.

This section is more for the parents than the kids. Think of it as a sort of guide to the rest.
Stories of sea dragons go back farther than sailing itself – and continue to this day. Some of them, like Nicker, even travel. You can also expand on this to help the children learn about science, other countries, other cultures, and more.
We are a team. Danny and I “played the game,” which is the main source of the Nicker stories. Marci Carrara, an amazing wildlife artist, has made it possible for others to see what we always have. Come on over to meet us!
Now you get to meet the characters in the stories – Danny, Nicker, Emily, Simon, Gordie, Arful, Glicker and others are here.
This extended “table of contents” tells you about the eleven stories in the first book.
You’ll find all kinds of stories here to share with the children. New stories will be put up regularly, so come back often. There is also an archive of earlier stories.
When I was a child, many cities had regular children’s programs on television, and many of these had lunch. I used to have “Lunch With Casey” and later “Lunch With Soupy Sales.” Food can be a fun way to share and learn – and Nicker has some interesting ideas about eating.
I expect this to grow. It’s where we will put letters (from you or the kids) and all sorts of other things. To help get it started there are even drawings you can print for the kids to color.
Eventually, we’ll be offering actual Nicker items. Just what these will be, I’m not sure yet. For now, come take a look at some other things we have to offer.
Contacting us is easy. There are clickable links in Meet the Creators, Store and a few other places – and again here, along with a special contact form.
