Mother’s Day was coming, and the two boys wanted to do something special for their mothers.
“I’m going to get my mother a blueberry pie,” said Nicker.
“How will you do that?”
“Easy. I’ll bake it.”
“We can’t use the oven,” Danny reminded Nicker.
Nicker paused a moment then said, “I’ll buy one!”
“We don’t have any money.”
Nicker paused again, then said, “We could plant flowers!”
Danny answered, “You remember the saying – April showers bring May flowers, and we had plenty of showers in April. But, there isn’t enough time now.”
The boys had a real problem – or so they thought. I bet you already know the answer. After a few moments, so did Danny.
“I know what we can do. We can DRAW May flowers!”
Well, Nicker thought this was a grand idea. He didn’t have hands or fingers, but in school had learned what all sea dragons learn in school. He could hold something like a pencil or crayon in his mouth to write a letter … or make a drawing.
Danny went to get some paper. He also brought the box of crayons and colored markers. Nicker said that he wanted to do his drawing without even Danny looking. Off he went with his paper … and a brown marker. Danny was puzzled. Trees are often brown, but Danny had never heard of a brown flower. May flowers are supposed to be colorful. Oh well. Maybe flowers in the sea aren’t. Maybe Nicker was going to draw brown seaweed? Seaweed can be brown.
For himself, Danny wanted to use all the colors. Red, blue, green, yellow, orange …. He set about making a whole flower garden. It even had a lawn. As he worked, Nicker came back, dropped the brown marker on the table and went off with the gray and the black markers. Brown and gray and black flowers? Just what was Nicker up to?
Danny continued on his drawing. He wanted it to be just right for his mother. Meanwhile, Nicker was off in his corner, busy as could be. Nicker was even humming. Danny heard him saying over and over, “April showers bring May flowers.” Danny still wondered what kind of flowers were just brown and gray … and black?
“I’m done,” Danny announced.
Nicker flipped his drawing over so Danny couldn’t see it then came to look at what Danny had done. “That’s really beautiful,” he said. Now come see mine.”
Nicker flipped the drawing over. “April showers bring Mayflowers,” he said with a grin. “And Mayflowers bring …?”
“Oh, Nicker!”
“And Mayflowers bring …?” Nicker repeated.
With a big sigh Danny said, “Pilgrims.”
