A Captain Santa Kazoo Birthday

Danny was excited. Nicker was excited. Gordie the Tortie did his best to pretend to not be excited but he was. Just in case you don’t know (but you probably do) … Danny’s birthday is February 12, which just happens to be Nicker’s birthday. Nobody, not even Gordie, knew when Gordie’s birthday was. He was sad. So, Danny and Nicker decided to make their birthday Gordie’s birthday, too. Once again the three will celebrate together. And, although he tried to hide it, Gordie was VERY excited.

Once again, their friend Captain Kazoo would be coming. You already know that Captain Kazoo is the only adult human, other than Santa, who can see sea dragons. Captain Kazoo sent a note, “I wouldn’t miss your birthday party, and will bring Repeet, and lots of kazoos for everyone!”

To Danny’s surprise, they got another note. It said, “You’re all very special. I’m still tired from Christmas but would love to have a party with all of you.” It was signed … SANTA!

Wouldn’t YOU be excited if Captain Kazoo and Santa were coming to YOUR birthday party?

Danny wanted to put up a Christmas tree, but finding a Christmas tree in February isn’t easy. He and Nicker did the best they could to make one from pieces of colored paper. They made a “birthday tree.” Glicker helped, but mostly kept moving the paper ornaments around on the paper tree until the glue made them stick. Gordie wanted to dig a Birthday Cavern. (Danny had to tell Gordie that digging a hole in the kitchen floor wasn’t allowed – not even the tortoise version of a chimney for Santa to come down.)

They got cookies, though. Nicker insisted on peanut butter cookies. Gordie, who doesn’t know much about cookies, thought grape cookies would be a good idea. (Have you ever tried to find grape cookies at the store?) Danny thought chocolate chip. Then there was the popcorn. (Gordie was disappointed that grapes don’t pop the same way.)

They got pizza (but no grape pizza – that’s as hard to find as a Christmas tree in February).

They got a triple layer birthday cake – chocolate cake, bananas, vanilla cake, peanut butter, chocolate cake, grape topping. It was perfect! Danny loves chocolate and banana. Nicker loves peanut butter. Gordie loves bananas and grapes. Captain Kazoo … well,, he loves it all.

They got decorations – more than just the paper birthday tree. Danny took care of the higher things from a ladder. Gordie didn’t know how to climb a ladder very well so took care the decorations by the floor. Nicker was pretty good at stretching his neck so handled the middle.

Pretty soon they were ready. It wasn’t the best decorating job. To be fair, it was a mess. Imagine decorating a room by a young boy, a sea dragon, his little sister, and a large tortoise down on the floor.

Just as they finished they heard, “BZZzz deBzzzzday to bzzzzyou” coming from outside the door. You guessed it. Danny opened the door and they all shouted, “CAPTAIN KAZOO!” (Of course, Repeet said, “Captain Kazoo, Captain Kazoo.”)

Well, it didn’t take long before they were all humming all kinds of songs, and Repeet repeating as best he could. It also didn’t take long for them to run out of birthday carols. (Maybe you can help? Get your friends and your kazoos. Make some birthday carols! Send them to Nicker and Danny.)

There came other sounds. Hoofs and bells. And “Ho ho ho!”

And there he was. “Do I smell cookies?” Santa asked.

He had special birthday presents for Danny, Nicker and Gordie. He also had special candy canes for everyone. Have you ever heard of a peanut butter candy cane? Well, Nicker got one! Gordie got one not just grape flavor but made from real grapes. Danny’s looked like the usual red-n-white peppermint but tasted like … you’ll have to ask Danny. Whatever it was, Danny was amazed.

As the party continued, Danny whispered to Nicker, “Have you ever noticed that Captain Kazoo and Santa look alike?”

Nicker answered, “Of course they do! They’re related. Didn’t you know that?”

Well … Danny didn’t know that. Not many do except sea dragons. But now you know why Captain Kazoo is the only adult human other than Santa who can see sea dragons.

Or … do you?

For now, here’s Captain Kazoo himself. Get out your kazoo (remember, hum, don’t blow), or guitar, or drum, or … whatever you have … or just sing along. After, you can have a piece of cake, or a candy cane of a flavor you’ve never had before.
